This summer, my nine year old son, Paul, built his first electric motor from copper wire, magnet, 2 wires, battery, foam, 2 paper clips, and a straw. It took several attempts to get the motor to work properly; however, with a little persistence, the motor worked perfectly. It was Paul's first steps in learning about electromagnetic principles.
